Outpatient Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: Is It Currently a Good Idea?

Abstract

The aim of this article has been to analyze what the literature says about outpatient revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) in order to determine whether it is currently a worthwhile intervention. Although existing publications on outpatient rTKA claim that it is a safe and effective procedure, their authors also state that proper patient selection is essential. However, none of these publications clearly states how this selection should be made. In addition, all authors agree that more well-designed studies with a high degree of evidence are needed in order to be able to say with scientific certainty that rTKA can be considered a good idea. One study has tried to foretell appropriate outpatient candidates following rTKA utilizing machine learning [random forest (RF) model]. It was found that the ten essential factors favoring outpatient rTKa in the RF model were operating time, anesthesia type, age, BMI (body mass index), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade, race, history of diabetes, rTKA type, sex, and smoking status. Therefore, prospective, randomized controlled trials are required.
